Junior C’s advance to Quarter Finals

JCFC, GROUP A, ROUND 5

27 AUGUST 2019 – WALTERSTOWN QUALIFY FOR QUARTER FINAL

Walterstown hosted Syddan, knowing that a win was required to secure a Quarter Final berth.

The Blacks played against the wind and away from the clubhouse end in the first half. Syddan started brightly, scoring a free and a point from play in the first 2 minutes. However, Walterstown then took control, scoring 2-6 without reply during the next 10 minutes. Stephen Davis opened the home side’s account with a free, before Andrew Moran equalized with a point from play. A goal from Stephen, after good work by Andrew Barry, was followed by points from play from Mark Foy, Andrew Moran and Andrew Barry. Adam Barrett scored a second goal, before Andrew Barry added another point. Syddan hit the next two points, before Mark scored Walterstown’s third goal. On the stroke of half-time, Syddan scored their fifth point. Unfortunately, the first half performance came at a price for Walterstown, losing both Mark and Kashif Ali to injury, who were replaced during the interval by Kit Reynolds and Paul Foy.

Half-time: Walterstown 3-6 Syddan 0-5

The injuries appeared to disrupt the Blacks’ rhythm, despite having the advantage of playing with a good lead and a healthy breeze. It was Syddan who opened the scoring in the second half, before Stephen responded with a free. Conor McGuire replaced Andrew Barry, who had put in a productive shift. Syddan added a further two points, before Christopher Farrelly replied with a point. The sides then exchanged points, with Kevin Devine scoring what turned out to be the home team’s final score of the match. A goal gave Syddan hope approaching the game’s final 5 minutes. Eoin Finlay then replaced Conor McGuire, before Syddan scored the final point of the match.

Full-time: Walterstown 3-9 Syddan 1-10

Whilst the management team was disappointed with the second-half display, they remain pleased with the effort put in by the panel over the season to secure knockout football. Walterstown now face Clann Na nGael in the Quarter Final, on a date to be advised. All support is greatly appreciated.
