Walterstown hold off Clann to reach Semi Final

JCFC QUARTER FINAL –

WALTERSTOWN V CLANN NA NGAEL

Friday 27 September 2019

Walterstown brought a panel of 25 to Dunganny to face Clann Na nGael, in the Junior C Football Championship Quarter Final, played under lights on a fine surface.

Clann attacked into the Clubhouse end in the first half, playing with a slight wind. Walterstown opened the scoring in the first minute, with an Adam Barrett free, which Clann cancelled out, with a free of their own, in the fourth minute. After six minutes, a good team move saw Ciaran Murphy put in on goal and he finished to the net. The Athboy lads took the score in their stride and responded well, scoring a goal and two points during the following six minutes, with Killian, Luke and Anthony Swaine, Conor Fenton and Liam McNamara all prominent. Walterstown then lost Kashif Ali to injury, being replaced by Eoin O’Leary. Two frees from Adam levelled the scores, before Clann reeled off the next four points. A point from play from Adam reduced the deficit to a score, just before the half-time whistle.

Half-time: Walterstown 1-4 Clann Na nGael 1-7

The Blacks started the second half well, with early points from play from Mark Foy and Conor Lenehan, before a Stephen Davis goal saw Walterstown take a two point lead. Clann responded with a point. The Blacks then gained the upper hand for a spell, aided by the wind. After scoring a point from play, Paul Foy was replaced by Aidan O’Connor and Adam Cummins came on to give Ciaran a well earned rest. A second goal from Stephen followed, with a long-distance point from Christopher Farrelly pushing the lead out to six, before Kit Reynolds replaced Christoper. The sides then exchanged points, with the Blacks’ score of the game coming from Aidan. Clann’s goalscoring record during the group phase suggested they were well capable of striking back and they did so, with a point and a goal reducing the deficit to two, approaching injury time, with Críostór Ucheanna showing well having come off the bench. Andrew Barry then replaced Darren Finnegan. After a free from Stephen, the action moved to the other end and a great save from Darragh Keegan was required to keep Clann at bay. Clann’s final score of the match came from a free, leaving the Athboy lads short by just two points at the final whistle.

Full-time: Walterstown 3-10 Clann Na nGael 2-11

The management team was delighted to see the lads hold out for victory in the face of a determined comeback by Clann. Walterstown now meet Dunsany in the Semi-Final, set for 11.30 am on Sunday 13 October 2019 in Summerhill. All support is greatly appreciated.
