Blacks up to third with win away to Ballivor

Division 3 Round 10 Ballivor V Walterstown Wed 29th May

For the penultimate round of the League Walterstown travelled to Ballivor. Walterstown were missing several players, in came Peter Reynolds, Sam McCabe and Conor Lenehan to the starting line-up, with Mark McCormack slotting into midfield.

Brian O Connell registered the first score, with a point from a free less than a minute in. The next score was a goal, when a great interception by Aron McLoughlin allowed him to charge goal wards and unselfishly lay it off to and unmarked Brian O Connell, who found the back of the net. Ballivor responded with a point, but Walterstown forwards were in the mood. Sam McCabe laid off lovely pass to Robbie McDonnell, who turned provider for Brian O Connells second goal. The blacks were in control now, further points from Davy Reynolds, Robbie McDonnell and John Geoghegan saw them build up a healthy lead. Ballivor did reduce this lead, with a goal, on the brink of half time, and Walterstown headed in at the break with a six-point lead.

Half Time: Ballivor 1:04 Walterstown 2:07

Ballivor got the first score of the second half and had much the brighter start. They scored their second goal of the game 5 minutes in, and followed this with two points from play, and inside the opening 10 minutes their dominance had reduced Walterstowns lead to just 2 points. The blacks regrouped though and points from Aron McLoughlin, Brian O Connell and Robbie McDonnell restored their advantage, and indeed Ballivor would only register one more point in the second period. As the half wore on, John Geoghegan too advantage of the Ballivor keeper coming out a little too far and slotted in for Walterstown’s third and final goal. Aidan O Conor came on for Conor Lenehan, as the blacks ran out comfortable winners in the end

Full Time: Ballivor 2:04 Walterstown 3:17

This result moved Walterstown up to third in the table, setting up an interesting final round of matches, as the top two, Castletown and Ballinlough play each other and Walterstown face St Ultans.
