What a night! It started with a convoy trip from Walterstown GFC to the pitch at Bellowstown racecourse lead by our one and only, Mr Joey Farrelly. Now there’s an easy way to do things – and then there’s the Joey way!!! We took the beautiful scenic route through county Meath – up and down hills, across boreens and by-roads – with one loop being so nice we did it twice! Then there was the weather – rainy and misty. And then there was the match…
The girls played a terrific game against a tough opposition who were as determined as we were. The first two quarters saw us leading with 3 goals and 4 points to 1 goal and 7 points. There was great passing up the pitch with all the girls using their soloing and hand passing skills to get the ball up the field. The Duleek girls challenged Walterstown with courage and conviction and by half time it still could have went either way.
The third quarter saw the sides come ever closer with Duleek scoring 1 goal and 1 point to Walterstown 3 points. However, fantastic goal keeping by Maebh and superb play by Katie, Caoibhe, Lucy and Tiarnach (to name but a few) made our girls ever the more determined. Not once did they ease off the pressure and the constant rain didn’t even seem to register with them.
It was in the fourth quarter that Walterstown pulled away with another goal and a point. Again great defending by the girls prevented Duleek scoring at all in this quarter. The game with a great victory dance in the changing rooms!! Waltertown u12 girls are now through to the semi-finals. Well done girls!
