21 June 2015
Walterstown defeated Donaghmore Ashbourne to claim the Meath U14 Division 1 title at Pairc TailteannWalterstown 1-8 Donaghmore Ashboure 2-3
Walterstown claimed the U14 Div1 title for the 1st time in decades in a bright, sunny and pristine Pairc Tailteann on Thus 18th June 2015.
Playing towards the town with a slight breeze on their backs the “Blacks” were 1st to get the scoreboard ticking over with a brace of points. Donaghmore/Ashbourne responded well with a strong surging run through the centre of the Walterstown defence ending with the ball in the back of the Walterstown net.
Unfazed, Walterstown regrouped and picked off a further 3pts before Donaghmore/Ashboure picked off their final score of the first half. A sweeping movement up the pitch resulted in a Walterstown attacker being hauled to the ground inside the large square resulting in a penalty which was duly dispatched by Walterstown to give them a 4pt lead going in at the break.
Half Time: Walterstown 01:05 Donaghmore/Ashboure 01:01
As the sun started to drop in the sky the game resumed with Walterstown again getting out of the blocks first registering a point. As the second half progressed scores became very scarce and hard come by but Walterstown picked off another couple of points and had a further point waved wide before a high ball into the Walterstown goalmouth was fumbled and ended up adding to the Donaghmore/Ashbourne tally. This score was quickly followed up with another Donaghmore/Ashbourne point to set up a tense and dramatic final 7-8mins as wave after wave of Donaghmore/Ashboure attack was fended off by a resolute Walterstown defence & goalkeeper who were not to be found wanting on the evening and prevented Donaghmore/Ashbourne adding to their 5 scores tally.
After the game the Walterstown captain Sean McGinley accepted the trophy adding to the U12 (2013) & U13 (2014) trophies already secured by the squad & going some way to make up for the Div1 Feile final defeat earlier in the year.
