LGFA : Masita Cup Final , Ballinlough Sat 5th Apr 7:30pm

Moylagh V Walterstown

Referee Sarah Stanley

On a crisp evening Walterstown travelled to Ballinlough to face Moylagh, in the often postponed Masita Cup Final. Walterstown were without the influential Julie Donnellan in the heart of the team but were none the less determined to give it a crack.

Walterstown where the first to raise the white flag via the boot of Mollie Brown from a free three minutes in. Walterstown had the edge in the opening 10 minutes of the points and saw additional points added by Jennifer Lynch and Niamh McGuinness.  Walterstowns Emma Looby also took a heavy knock in a last gasp effort to prevent a Moylagh goal, but that goal eventually came half way through the opening period. This was the catalyst that swung the advantage towards Moylagh, who went on to add a second goal and seal a five-point lead heading into the break and it could have been worse as they saw a goal bound effort come back of the posts in time added on.

Half Time Score Moylagh 2:05 Walterstown 0:05

The Walterstown coaches drilled into the ladies that this tie was far from over as the lights kicked into the action and there was a definite chill in the air as the second half commenced. Lisa O Neill and Aisling Kelly and Eimear Farrelly were introduced after the break. This time is was Moylagh who register the first score, and it would be their last for most of the half as Walterstown set about reeling them in. Jennifer Lynch and Mollie Brown scored points either side of a fine stop from substitute keeper Lisa O’ Neill. With five minutes to go, Walterstown were four points adrift, and the black’s supporters were shouting for joy as the ball hit the back of the Moylagh net, but it was subsequently disallowed. However, it was Moylagh who finished stronger scoring a goal and a point late on to secure the Masita Cup.
