Walterstown V Skryne , Ladies Championship
Wednesday 5th September, 8pm Walterstown
On Wednesday evening, under lights on the back pitch, the Walterstown Ladies faced local rivals Skryne in the Championship. The earlier rain showers had dissipated before the game began, however the playing surface was slick and fast.
Walterstown were first to register a score from a free, duly converted by Mollie Brown, in the opening minute. Skryne responded with two points of their own. Ten minutes in and Skryne were awarded a penalty, which was duly dispatched despite Lisa O Neill getting a fingertip to it. Walterstown responded quickly however with an immediate goal via Jennifer Lynch. However Skryne were starting to dominate the half and scored a goal and six points without reply to give them a healthy lead going into the break.
Half Time: Walterstown 1:04(7) Skryne 2:09 (15)
By the start of the second half the rain was persistent and Walterstown made two changes with Eimear Farrelly joining the attack and Lucy Reynolds slotting into the defence. This time Skryne were first to score as they increased their lead to eight points. It did not last long, as when Annie Martin received the ball around the half way mark; she set off on a surging run and stuck the ball firmly into the Skryne net. Once again Skryne hit back with two more goals and points and appeared to have the game in the bag with 15 minutes left to go and a thirteen point lead. As both side introduced changes, Nadine Swan, Aisling Kelly, and Niamh McGuinness for Walterstown, it was Walterstown who were gaining momentum. Eimear Farrelly when close a few times with some goal bound efforts, and Jennifer Lynch bagged her second goal of the game with ten minutes to go. Eimear Farrellys efforts paid dividends when she did grab her goal with five minutes of normal time to go, and this was followed up by points from Julie Donnellan and Mollie Brown and now Skrynes lead had been reduced to four points. Walterstown were now camped deep in Skryne’s half but time was their enemy and Skryne clung onto their four point lead.
