Walterstown got off to a good start scoring 3pts in the first 7 minutes from Brian O Connell, Mark McCormack and David Donnellan. Rathkenny opened their account on the 13th minute with a point from a free. Walterstown gained the initiative over the next 6 minutes scoring a point from Mark McCormack and a very calmly taken goal from Karl McHale with a further point from David Donnellan . Walterstown were now leading by 7points with 21minutes gone in the first half,

Rathkenny however responded scoring 2points and a goal to reduce the deficit to 3points. Christopher Farrelly added the last point of the first half to leave Walterstown going in at half time with a 4point lead

The second half saw a quick change in momentum as Rathkenny got off to a flying start scoring a goal and 2points with only 10 minutes gone, this pushed Rathkenny into a 1point lead, David Donnellan scored the next 2points for Walterstown to put them back in front with 45 minutes gone on the clock Rathkenny scored their next point from play to leave the game tied with 12 minutes left. Brian O Connell and Christopher Farrelly scored the next 2 points to push Walterstown into a 2 point lead with 8 minutes left Rathkenny were not going away and came back strongly adding the next 3 points to push their team into a 1 point lead with just 2 minutes remaining The Blacks made one final onslaught on the Rathkenny goal and came very close to scoring a dramatic winning goal but the Rathkenny defence held firm making Walterstown recycle the ball to Sean Irwin for him to slot over the crucial point to give the Blacks a deserved draw
