Almost four years ago the Walterstown Gaelic for Mothers and Others (G4M&O) team held their very first training session. Some 20 plus scared women and two coaches. What were they letting themselves in for? Would the coaches be able for them?!

Going Strong

Roll on to today; well they are still going strong. Stronger than ever in fact. Friends. Camaraderie. Fun. Exercise. Togetherness. Just some of the words you could use to describe the Walterstown Gaelic for Mother & Others team. There’s always a warm welcome. There is always some craic to be had, we can promise you that!

Aside from the fun, the laughter, the friendships and the camaraderie, what else can you expect from our GFM&O team? Well training happens twice a week, where they work on skills such as the handpass, kicking and the solo. It’s a chance to improve your fitness but most of all, it’s a chance to have some fun, make new friends and be part of a team full of wonderful women who have each other’s backs. New players are always welcome on our G4M&O team and make no mistake about it, experience isn’t the be all and end all.

Walterstown G4M&O

In each of the years since our G4M&O team was formed, they have played in the Leinster Blitz, The National Blitz and several club blitzes, as well as challenge games with local Meath and Dublin clubs. The afters of tea, cake and chats with the opposing teams is always looked forward to.

Our G4M&O team also play a crucial role when it comes to club fundraising. They bag pack, collect clothes, Solo for Siún and in non-Covid times, put on some great Christmas shows.

The Gaelic for Mothers and Others initiative was set up to introduce mothers and women to Ladies Gaelic football. Mothers often drop their kids to training and call back to collect them, but the Ladies Gaelic Football Association wants to change that.

Walterstown G4M&O

The Gaelic For Mothers and Others initiative sees women playing Ladies Gaelic Football in a fun, non-competitive and social environment. It provides an opportunity for women to get their recommended weekly exercise in a fun way. It’s also a way for women to meet other mothers and friends in Johnstown and Walterstown. The initiative has proved hugely popular with women of all ages and has taken off in all 32 counties with success stories popping up all over the country. There is a Provinicial Blitz organised in each of the provinces every year and a national blitz which have been a huge success with over  2,500 participants taking part in the national blitz days each year.
