Walterstown vs Duleek Bellewstown IFC 2nd Round

21 April 2019

Walterstown played Duleek- Bellewstown in sunny Ratoath on Sunday. Walterstown had been narrowly defeated by Dunderry in the Intermediate First Round so they were really hoping to kick-start their championship here with a win. Duleek playing against the strong breeze got their first point in the 1st minute. Alban Crosbie and Brian O Connell scored the next 2 points for Walterstown before Duleek levelled the match at 2 points apiece after 7 minutes. However the Blacks then stamped their authority on the game. They dominated the rest of the half and added 2 points each from Brian O Connell, Sam McCabe and 2 well taken Alban Crosbie frees. Davy Donnellan also scored a nice point half way through the half before coming off with an injury. He was replaced by Adam Treanor.  Walterstown’s backs worked hard as a unit while the forwards waited patiently for their opportunities. Walterstown’s goalkeeper,  John Davis however had to be alert to stop what looked like a certain goal from Duleek  after 20 minutes.  When Referee Richard Morris blew for half time, Walterstown lead by 0-9 to 0-2.

Walterstown now playing against the wind got off to a great start in the second half. An excellent Brian O Connell free after 1 minute followed by a well taken point from a hard working Aron McLoughlin put them 0-11 to 0-2 in front. This was followed by another Brian O Connell point. However Duleek now got going and even though Walterstown backs defended well Duleek began to shrink the lead through well taken frees and some long range shots. After 28 minutes Walterstown were only 3 points in front at 0-12 to 0-9. However they held their nerve well in a frantic last few minutes and tagged on 2 more insurance points, one from Sub Robbie McDonnell and another free from Brian O Connell.  Their keeper John Davis was called on to make another point blank save with only minutes to go. At the final whistle a relieved Walterstown were winners by 0-14 to 0-9. Walterstown Manager Joe Treanor was very pleased with this very good team performance by his players. They all worked hard as a team and even on this hot Sunday kept their composure until the final whistle.
